Endemic parrot and owl of the northeast mexico

Northeast
      birding tour
                  9 days

In this expedition we divide our time between Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas states in the Northeast portion of Mexico. The Sierra Madre Oriental contributes to the formation of diverse ecosystems: from desert shrublands to oak and pine forest, and from the grasslands to the cloud forest and rivers from the mountains. This increases the diversity of birds, resulting in several restricted range species like the Maroon-fronted Parrot, Worthen’s Sparrow, Tamaulipas Pygmy Owl, Altamira Yellowthroat and others.

Day 2: Santiago - Laguna de Sánchez                                               ☾ Sleep in Laguna de Sánchez

Our first full day of birding starts in a great spot just outside of the city. This area is full of birds in the low mountains and oak forests. We will try to find some special birds here, like the Crimson-collared Grosbeak and the Blue-capped Motmot, but there are many other interesting birds to see too, like the Long-billed Thrasher, Blue Bunting, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Audubon's Oriole, Varied Bunting, and Gray-crowned Yellowthroat. On a good morning, we can expect to see around 40 different bird species. In the afternoon, we'll drive high up into the mountains of Santiago. The scenery will change as we climb. First mountain shrubland then, we'll see lots of oak trees. Finally, way up high, there will be tall pine trees. We'll make several birding stops along the way, where we can spot the Mexican Jay, Painted Redstart, Brown-backed Solitaire, Rufous-capped Brushfinch, and many more interesting birds. Finally, we'll arrive at the Laguna de Sanchez area, where we'll spend the night. This location is very close to Maroon-fronted Parrot habitat, making it an ideal base for spotting these magnificent birds.
